how to

Measure

Measuring your own blinds is easy. If you’re on a budget, taking your own measurements is a great way to save money.

You need:

  • A tape measure.
  • A pen and piece of paper.
  • A second person to hold the tape measure (on larger windows).

Decide if you want your blinds to fit on the inside of the jamb (the most popular choice) or on the outside of the jamb.

For an inside fit:

  • Measure the width of the window from jamb to jamb. We recommend you measure it in three places and write down the shortest measurement for us to use.
  • To measure the drop, take the measurement from the top jamb to the bottom jamb (or windowsill). We recommend doing this in three places and write down the shortest measurement for us to use.
  • Do NOT make any adjustments to these measurements for gaps, etc. We will sort this out for you.

For an outside fit:

  • Take your measurement from architrave to architrave.
  • Measure the drop from the top of where you want your blind to hang to the bottom.
  • Do NOT make any adjustments to these measurements for gaps, etc. We will sort this out for you.

Write down the measurements in millimetres (mm) to the nearest 1mm. It can be helpful to draw a diagram of the room so you remember which measurement is for which window.

Keep an eye out for tiles and handles and other details that need to be taken into account to ensure your blinds fit perfectly.

For each window, note if you want your controls on the left or right-hand side. (This is which side of your body as you face the window).

Install

Our experienced team are happy to install your blinds for you, but if you’re on a budget you can save some money by doing it yourself. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get things right:

Roller blinds

You will need:

  • Your blinds (your blinds come complete with all the brackets and screws you need)
  • A drill
  • A small square drill bit
  • An extra person to help hold the blinds (for large windows)

For an inside fit, start by screwing the brackets into the side or the top of the window jamb – whichever works better. If you’re doing an outside fit, you’ll screw the brackets through the architrave or the face of the window jamb. You may like to use a level to make sure the brackets are even.

First, slide the end of the blind with the controls into the bracket. The other end is spring-loaded, so you can just push it into the second bracket.

(If you need to remove the blind for cleaning, turn/rotate the gear on the spring-loaded end until the blind comes out of the bracket. Then slide the other end out.)

Wooden blinds

You will need:

  • Your blinds (your blinds come complete with all the brackets and screws you need)
  • A drill
  • A small square drill bit
  • A measuring tape (for large windows)
  • An extra person to help hold the blinds (for large windows)

First, you’ll need to screw in the brackets. For an inside fit, they go the side jamb of the window at the front. For an outside fit, the brackets go on the architrave or the face of the jamb.

For longer blinds, you’ll need to install a third bracket in the centre of the window to help hold the weight. You’ll want to measure across your window jamb to get the bracket in the centre. Be aware: avoid screwing the bracket in above any of the tapes/strings in the headrail.

Once your brackets have been screwed in, place one end of the headrail into a bracket. Slide the other end into the open bracket and clip shut. Easy!

To remove the blind, open the front of the brackets and slide the headrail out.
